UDI Work Group Submits Comments to the FDA and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

The UDI Work Group brings together a dedicated coalition of solution providers, manufacturers, distributors, hospitals, and industry stakeholders to advance compliance and best practices in the medical device field. This week the group submitted two sets of comments related to the effective implementation of the UDI in tracking of medical devices through the supply chain. The first letter was asked the FDA to enhance their Recall Enterprise System (RES) to discreetly store the UDI of recalled medical devices in distinct fields. The group strongly supports the use of machine-based interoperability to reduce human error and thereby enhance patient safety and increase efficiency.  Storing the UDI in distinct fields would be the first critical step in achieving this goal. The second letter was in response to a Call for Comments on the CMMS’ Notice of Advanced Proposed Rulemaking, CMS-1516-ANPRM, “Ensuring Safety Through Domestic Security with Made in America Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Essential Medicine Procurement by Medicare Participating Hospitals. The association encourages the use of open, interoperable standards as the most effective way to validate domestic sourcing, reduce administrative burden, and ensure auditability.
