AIM Uniform Symbol Description 1701 : KIX
The Technical Symbology Committee (TSC) is comprised of individuals from AIM member companies who are the world's leading experts on symbology design, as well as printing and decoding algorithms. Companies actively work with the committee to ensure a complete technical specification is available to the market. Many symbologies published as AIM specifications have been adopted by the international community via the ISO standardization process. The AIM TSC produced this USD as part of their postal code project. Postal symbologies (e.g. a series of tall and short bars such as Postnet) have long been utilized in customized sortation equipment where the equipment is designed to work with a particular symbology, generally created by the postal service (e.g., USPS). As the use of handheld imagers became mainstream, postal symbologies of all varieties are now being scanned by off-the-shelf scanners from many vendors. Unlike traditional bar codes that were generally developed by the scanner manufacturers and standardized by AIM, most of the postal symbologies were developed by individual postal services for their own use. Consequently, the quality and consistency of the written standards vary widely. What is needed is a single repository of symbology specifications for use by all scanner manufacturers. Registered names/trademarks used in this USD are the properties of their owner. For more information on this project and how to participate, contact AIM at info@aimglobal.org.
