Extended Channel Interpretations: Part 3: Register, lists all currently assigned ECIs whose use is described in Part 1. It includes Interpretative ECIs (which include Character Set ECIs) and Transformation ECIs (excluding Closed System ECIs). This document is intended to serve as a companion document to Part 1. The Extended Channel Interpretations (ECI) standard specifies the protocol for extending the interpretative capabilities of basic 7-bit, 8-bit, multi-byte, and 16-bit codes when the data is encoded in data carriers. 

The Technical Symbology Committee (TSC) made several substantial updates to the standard. Changes were made to the interpretative Character Set so that the reference titles reflect the most recent editions of ISO/IEC documents.  Examples of barcode samples and scanned results were added to portions of the document .  An Informative Annex was added to the document to showcase how the ECI protocol supports multiple segments in the input data from one-dimensional barcode and two-dimensional barcodes, each denoting a specific character encoding.
