In recent years, the industry has seen an improvement in tag sensitivity and therefore
RAIN RFID applications have become return link limited, which means the readers fail
to hear the tag answer due to low backscatter power coming back to the reader.
Another reason for failure in deployment is the poor sensitivity of the RAIN RFID
readers. To overcome these challenges and improve the accuracy and read rates of
readers, the next generation of readers need to be highly sensitive, phase
independent, and insensitive to production caused variation of tag parameters such
as Backscatter Link Frequency (BLF) and timing tolerances
CISC RFID Xplorer (Xplorer) was CISC’s solution to overcome the challenge of testing
RAIN RFID readers on important parameters as developed by the RAIN RFID Alliance
and defined in the ISO standard ISO/IEC 18046-2. CISC added a fully configurable
Tag Emulator which allowed the measurement of reader transmit power and reader
receiver sensitivity through variable backscatter strength as proposed by the RAIN
RFID Alliance and ISO standard ISO/IEC 18046-2. The configurability of Xplorer along
with its capability of decoding tag and reader communication in real-time prompted
the R&D team from leading RAIN RFID reader manufacturers to use RFID Xplorer to
quantify the performance of their readers and accurately measure the read rates.
