Motorola - Fonterra Co-op Group Ltd.
Motorola - Fonterra Co-op Group Ltd. 2014 AIM 2014 AIDC (Non RFID) Case Study Competition Participant The Business and Technical Challenge leading food companies, employing a staff of more than 16,000. Fonterra is also a market leader with consumer dairy brands in Australia/New Zealand, Asia/ Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Drawing on generations of dairy expertise, Fonterra is one of the largest investors in dairy-based research and innovation in the world. Fonterra had been capturing bar code data for tracking and inventory in its dairy manufacturing operations for more than a decade, but lately had been frustrated with the performance of its existing scanning devices. A proprietary Bluetooth interface made the scanners difficult to use with other hardware, such as the tablets that were replacing manual checklists throughout their manufacturing operations. In the rough-and-tumble of daily operations, scanners were frequently dropped and, due to the moving parts used in the focusing assembly, they broke far too easily. The Solution Motorola proposed the DS3500-ER Series scanner as a replacement to Fonterra’s existing scanner fleet. Motorola Product Manager Matt Kowalski says, "The DS3508-ER is really an ideal fit for a manufacturer like Fonterra. It’s an extended range unit that can reliably read both 1D and 2D bar codes so close that it’s nearly touching them, then turn around to almost instantly read another up to 30 feet away. And it’s ruggedized to stand up to the demands of a tough industrial environment.” But Mike Saint (Fonterra’s IT Services Owner) says that Motorola impressed them with more than just specs. "Being able to come to the States and see Motorola – the factory, the people, the scanners working under realistic test conditions – was worlds ahead of what our previous vendor could offer us,” Saint recalls. "And in fact, the technology itself was light years ahead of other things we saw.”
