This document does not dwell on the business rationale why, although the diagram below hints at one of the many reasons, namely that RFID tags identify a specific object and not just a class of objects. Briefly, other reasons include the fact that RFID tags store additional data, this data may be written and updated in the field and that tags do not require line-of sight to function.
