Historical overview - RF identification of animals requires that the data transmitted by a tag (data carrier) are interpretable by a transceiver (interrogator). This document specifies the standards to be used for a specific frequency for the transmission of data and the characteristics of the transmission protocols between a passive tag and interrogator.

This document was developed in response to mandates from the Canadian and United States governments to improve tracking of cattle.  It was been developed to cover all species of food animals.
